 Sentence Narration এবং Passage Narration এর Rules

***Basic Discussion :

◼◻ Narration/Speech মনে উক্তি। একজন বক্তার বক্তব্য ব্যক্ত করার উপাকে Narration/Speech বলে।

Narration/Speech দুই প্রকার -

    1. Direct Speech ( প্রত্যক্ষ উক্তি ) 

    2. Indirect Speech ( পরোক্ষ উক্তি )

◽◾ Direct Speech - বক্তার দ্বারা বলা হুবহু বক্তব্য যা সে নিজের মুখ দিয়ে বলে তা হলো Direct Speech. 

◽◾ Indirect Speech - বক্তার বক্তব্যের সারাংশ যা অন্য কেউ তার মত করে বলে তখন তা Indirect Speech.

***এটাতো গেলো Narration এর ভাষাগত পরিচয়। কিন্তু Narration ভালোভাবে শিখতে হলে নিম্নোক্ত ছয়টি টপিক ভালোভাবে বুঝতে হবে -

1. Speaker, Listener, Reporting Verb & Reported Speech :

Direct Speech এর দুইটি অংশ থাকে। একটিকে Reporting Verb এবং অন্যটিকে Reported Speech বলে ।

     Inverted Comma এর বাহিরের Verb কে বলে Reporting Verb. 

     Inverted Comma এর ভিতরের Sentence কে বলে Reported Speech.

    যে কথা বলে সে Speaker যে শোনে সে Listener.

যেমন :

1.        He said to me, “I am happy now.” 

   »  He told me that he was happy then. 

2.        He said to me, “You are very nice.” 

   »  He told me that I was very nice. 

3.        She said to me, “She is reading English.”

   »  She told me that she was reading English. 

Note: -

1st Person, Subject কে অনুসরণ করে। (1=1)

2nd Person, Object কে অনুসরণ করে।(2=2)

3rd Person, কোনো পরিবর্তন হয় না।(3=3)

Sentence Narration

Exam এ সাধারণত Narration  “Passage” আকারে আসে। কিন্তু Passage Narration পারার জন্য Sentence Narration এ দক্ষতা অর্জন করা জরুরি। Sentence Narration না জানলে Passage Narration Problem হয়। তাই, আমরা প্রথম এ কিভাবে Sentence Narration করতে হয় তা শিখবো। 

Assertive Sentence

Reporting Verb এর পর Object না থাকলে Indirect Speech এ “Said” অপরিবর্তিত থাকবে + Inverted Comma উঠে that বসবে + Person Tense পরিবর্তন হবে + Extention (অতিরিক্ত অংশ) 

Direct : Rashid said, “I am reading a story book now.” 

Indirect : Rashid said that he was reading a story book then. 

Reporting Verb এর পর Object থাকলে said to এর পরিবর্তে told ব্যবহৃত হবে + Inverted Comma উঠে that বসবে + Person Tense পরিবর্তন হবে + Ext/বাকী অংশ

Direct : He said to me, “You are an honest person.” 

Indirect : He told me that i  was an honest  person.

Reporting Verb এর Tense যদি Present বা Future (say/says/will say) হয় তবে Reported Speech এর Verb এর Tense এর কোনো পরিবর্তন হবে না। 

Direct : Ridwan says, “I didn't find it.”

Indirect : Ridwan says that she didn't find it. 

Direct : I say, “I love pious people.” 

Indirect : I say that I love pious people. 

Direct : He will say to her, “I will meet you next sunday. ” 

Indirect : He will say to her that he will meet her next Sunday . 

Reported Speech চিরন্তন সত্য হলে Tense এর কোনো পরিবর্তন হয় না। শুধু Inverted Comma উঠে that বসে। 

Direct : Teacher said to the students, “The earth moves round the sun.” 

Indirect : Teacher said to the students that the earth moves round the sun. 

Reported Speech এ “Must” থাকলে এর পরিবর্তে had to বসে। কিন্তু Must দ্বারা যদি চিরন্তন সত্য বোঝা তাহলে এর কোনো পরিবর্তন হবে না। 

Direct : The Prophet said to them, “Man must die one day.” 

Indirect : The Prophet said /told them that man must die one day. 

Interrogative Sentence

Reporting Verb উঠে ask/asked বসবে। 

Reported Speech Wh-Question word  (what,which,where,why,when,who,how,…..)না থাকলে  অথবা  auxiliary verb দ্বারা বাক্য শুরু হলে Inverted Comma উঠে এর পরিবর্তে if/weather বসবে।

Reported Speech Wh-Question word থাকলে তা অপরিবর্তিত থাকবে। 

Direct : He said to me, “Do you want to read a book?” 

Indirect : She asked me if i wanted to read a book. 

Direct : Navid said to me, “Where did you visit yesterday?” 

Indirect : Navid asked me where I had visited the previous day. 

Direct :The teacher said to the student, “what are you doing now?”

♨Indirect : The teacher asked the student what he was doing then.

Imperative Sentence

Imperative Sentence Reporting Verb “said/said to” এর পরিবর্তে - 

অনুরোধ বোঝালে - requested 

আদেশ বোঝালে - ordered/commanded 

উপদেশ বোঝালে - advised 

নিষেধ বোঝালে - forbade 

ক্ষমা বোঝালে - begged বসে 

    +Inverted Comma উঠে to বসে + Verb এর Present Form + Extention ( অতিরিক্ত অংশ ) 

যেমন :

Direct : Father said to me, “Open the window.” 

Indirect : Father ordered me to open the window. 

Imperative Sentence টি Negative হলে - 

    to এর পরিবর্তে not to বসে।

    কিন্তু forbade লিখলে not to বসে না

যেমন :

Direct : Mother said to me, “Do not run in the sun.” 

Indirect : Mother ordered me not to run in the sun. 

     or, Mother forbade me to run in the sun. 

Reported Speech let দ্বারা প্রস্তাব বোঝালে বা let us/let's থাকলে :

  Let's বা let us এর পরিবর্তে proposed to বা suggested বসবে

  Inverted Comma উঠে that বসবে

  They/we এর সাথে should বসবে 

   Main verb to Extension

যেমন :

Direct : Siam said to us, “Let's go for a walk.”

Indirect : Siam proposed to us that we should go for a walk. 

Note: Reporting Verb এর আগে ও পরে I/me/we/us থাকলে subject We হয়, বাকি ক্ষেত্রে They হয়। 

যেমন :

Direct : Tanvir said to me, “Let's go for a long drive.”

Indirect : Tanvir proposed to me that we should go for a long drive.

Reported Speech Let এর পরে me/him/her/them ইত্যাদি থাকলে - 

     Said to এর পরিবর্তে told বসবে 

     Inverted Comma এর পরিবর্তে that বসবে 

     Let এর পরে me/him/her/them এর সাথে might বসবে 

     Verb এর Present Form + Extention (অতিরিক্ত অংশ) 

যেমন :

Direct : He said to me, “Let me try it again.” 

Indirect : He told me that he might try it again. 

Optative Sentence

***** Optative Sentence এ - 

   Inverted Comma উঠে that বসবে 

   say / says/ said to এর পরিবর্তে wish/ wishes/ wished or pray/prays/prayed বসবে 

   Reported Speech এর Subject + might 

   Verb এর Present Form + Extension (অতিরিক্ত অংশ) 

যেমন :

Direct :Tondra said to me, “May you be happy.” 

Indirect : Tondra prayed that I might be happy. 

এছাড়াও Optative Sentence

Would that থাকলে - Wished/Prayed 

Good Morning/Evening থাকলে - Wished 

Good Night/Good Bye থাকলে - Bade

**কারো জন্য নেতিবাচক প্রার্থনা করলে - Cursed ব্যবহার করবো।

যেমন :

 Direct : He said, “Would that I were young again.” 

 Indirect : He prayed that he would be young again. 

 Direct : He said, “Good morning teacher.” 

 Indirect : He wished the teacher good morning.

 Direct : He said to me, “Good Night.”

 Indirect : He bade me good night. 

 Direct : She said to her friend, “May you die soon.”

 Indirect : She cursed her friend that he/she might die soon.

More Examples of Optative Sentence for Practice :

Direct : I said to him, “May you get well soon.”

Indirect : I prayed that he might get well soon.

Direct : He said the teacher, “Good morning sir.”

Indirect : She respectfully wished the teacher good morning.

Direct : She said, “May God bless her soul.”

Indirect : She prayed that God might bless her soul. 

Direct : He said to me, "May you get success in exam!"

Indirect : He prayed me that I might get success in exam. 

Exclamatory Sentence

Exclamatory Sentence Reporting Verb Indirect Speech এ পরিবর্তিত হবে নিম্নলিখিত উপায়ে - 

আনন্দ বোঝাতে - exclaim with joy 

দুঃখ বোঝাতে - exclaim with sorrow/grief 

শুভেচ্ছা বোঝাতে - wish

বিস্ময় বোঝাতে - exclaim with surprise 

তাৎক্ষনিক আবেগ বোঝাতে - exclaim with wonder 

যেমন :

Direct : He said, “Hurrah! we have won the league.” 

Indirect : He exclaimed with joy that they had won the league. 

Reported Speech যদি How/What দ্বারা শুরু হয় - 

প্রথমে Reported Speech এর Subject + Verb বসে, তারপর 

ঐ বাক্যে যদি একটি Adjective থাকে তবে 

ঐ বাক্যে যদি Adjective না থেকে Noun থাকে তবে great বসে। 

যেমন :

Direct : He said, “How beautiful the sky is!” 

Indirect : He exclaimed with surprise that the sky was very beautiful. 

Direct : He, said, “What a fool you are!” 

Indirect : He exclaimed with wonder that you were a great fool.

How to Solve Passage Narration

সর্বপ্রথম, Passage টি A to Z ভালোভাবে পড়ে Speaker (বক্তা) এবং Listener (শ্রোতা) খুঁজে বের করতে হবে। 

Reporting Verb টি মাঝে বা শেষে যেখানেই থাকুক না কেন, Indirect করার সময় তাকে Sentence এর শুরুতে নিয়ে আসতে হবে। যেমন :

Direct : “You are doing very well.” The teacher said to the student. 

Indirect : The Teacher  told the student that he  was doing very well. 

পরপর দুটি বা তিনটি উক্তি থাকলে :

1.        Assertive Sentence :

 ( added that / also said that / again said that / further added) ব্যবহার করতে হবে। 

2.        Interrogative Sentence :

 (also asked / again asked) ব্যবহার করতে হবে। 

3.        Imperative Sentence :

 (also advised / again asked) 

যেমন :

Direct : He said to me, “I need your help. I will help you in future. Will you be able to help me?”

Indirect : He told me that he needed my help. He also said/added that he would help me in future. He also asked me if i would be able to help him. 

Some Extra Information

কিছু অতিরিক্ত তথ্য

1.        Yes = replied in the affirmative and said that… 

2.        No = replied in the negative and said that… 

3.        Dear friend/brother/sister = Addressing + object + as Dear friend/brother/sister অথবা 

    Addressing as Dear friend/brother/sister

4.        Sir/Madam = Addressing as Sir/Madam অথবা 

respectfully/politely + reporting verb 

5.        Sure = Giving assurance, (he said/told that…) 

6.        By Allah/God = Swearing by Allah/God

7.        Thank you = Thanked 

8.        Hi/Hello = Greeted/Drawing the attention

9.        Good Morning/Afternoon/evening = wished + good Morning/Afternoon/evening

10. Happy Birthday/Anniversary/New year = wished + Happy Birthday/Anniversary/New year

11. Bye/Good bye/Good night = bade 

12. Sorry = Apologize

Sample Question:

Q. Change the narrative style of the following text.

The teacher said to the student. "Adorable boy, do you like to go on a study tour? Your appearance deserves this." “Yes," said the student. "Take the permission from your parents." he said. One of the students said, "Where will we go, sir. Is it very far away?" “It will be decided after a discussion" said the teacher.

Solution : 

Addressing as adorable boy, the teacher asked the student if he(s) liked to go on a study tour. He also said that his appearance deserved that. The student replied in the

affirmative. Then the teacher advised him to take the permission from his parents. One of the students respectfully asked him (T) where they would go. He also asked him if it was far away. Then the teacher replied that it would be decided after a discussion.

"Where will you get admission after your HSC Examination? Do you have any choice?" said the teacher to Susmita. "I'm not yet sure what I have to do because everything depends on my result." "You should have a choice. Be positive and optimistic."

Answer: The teacher asked Susmita where she would get admission after her HSC Examination and if she had any choice. Susmita replied that she was not yet sure what she had to do because everything depended on her result. Then the teacher advised her to have a choice. He also advised her to be positive and optimistic.

 

Board Questions-2022 with Answer

[DHAKA BOARD-2022]

1. Change the narrative style by using indirect speeches.                                                         

"Follow my example," she said as we shook hands. "and never eat more than one thing for luncheon." "I'll do better than that," I retorted. "I'll eat nothing for dinner tonight." "Humorist! you're quite a humorist," she cried gaily, jumping into a cab.

Answer:

As we shook hands, she suggested me to follow her example and never eat more than one thing for luncheon. Then I retorted that I would do better than that and added that I would eat nothing for dinner that night. Hearing this, she exclaimed with wonder that I was a humorist and cried gaily said that I was quite a humorist, jumping into a cab

2. Change the narrative style by using indirect speeches.                                               

"What happened to you, Tareq?" said Rashed. "I was sick with the flu. Have you heard anything about our exam?" said Tareq. "It is on 23 October. You need to collect the admit card of the exam," said Rashed. "From where can I get it?" said Tareq. "It is in the office room," said Rashed

Rashed asked Tareq what had happened to him. Tareq replied that he had been sick with the flu. Then he asked Rashed whether he had heard anything about their exam. Rashed told that that was on 23 October. He added that he (T) needed to collect the admit card of the exam. Tareq asked from where he could get it. Rashed told that that was in the office room.

"Why are you crying? Do you have any problem?" asked the passer-by. "I am crying because I have none to look after me," said the street child. "Are you hungry?" "Yes, I am," said the boy.

The passer-by asked the street child why he was crying. He also asked the boy if he had any problem. The street child replied that he was crying because he had none to look after him. The passer-by again asked the boy whether he was hungry. The boy replied in the affirmative and said that he was hungry.

"Stop. Didn't I tell you to stop? You cannot go there," said the sergeant. "Oh! very well, it is hard thing to be very poor. All the world is against the poor," said the man.

The sergeant ordered the man to stop. He then asked him (M) if he (S) had not told him (M) to stop. He (S) further said that he (M) could not go there. Then accepting the idea with astonishment, the man said that it was hard thing to be very poor. He further added that all the world was against the poor.

5. Change the narrative style by using indirect speeches.

He said, "I can chop some wood today," "You? But you're small." "Size don't matter, chopping wood," Jerry said. "Some of the big boys don't chop good. I've been chopping wood at the orphanage for a longtime."

Answer:

Jerry told me that he could chop some wood that day. Being astonished/hesitated I asked him if he was small. At this he assured me that size did not matter chopping wood. He added that some of the big boys didn't chop good. He further told that he had been chopping wood at the orphanage for a long time.

Addressing the man as sir the receptionist asked him if she (R) could have helped him. The man replied with assurance and said that he wanted to meet the Managing Director of the company. Then the receptionist asked if he had an appointment. He replied in the affirmative and said that he had. At this the receptionist told him to wait for a while.

7. Change the narrative style by using indirect speeches.                     

"Oh, my Lord, please do not kill the child," said the woman. "Let her have him." The king said, "Now everything is clear to me." Pointing to the woman, he said to the servant, "Give her the child. She is the mother of the baby."

Addressing the king as her lord the woman requested him not to kill the child and said that she might be allowed to have him. The king said that then everything was clear to him. And then pointing to the woman he asked the servant to give her the child. He added that she was the mother of the baby.

8. Change the narrative style by using indirect speeches.                     

"Where is the cattle which these people graze and where are the fields they plough, uncle?" he asked, turning to Daya Ram. "They have no cattle and no fields here," said the chaprasi, pushing his neck back to stiff uprightness. "It is only the rustics in the villages who graze cattle and plough the land," he said.

Answer:

Turning to Daya Ram and addressing him as his uncle he asked him where the cattle was which those people grazed and where the fields were they ploughed. Pushing his neck back to stiff uprightness the chaprashi replied that they had no cattle and no fields there. He (C) added that it was only the rustics in the villages who grazed cattle and ploughed the land.

Answer: Jerry said that he could chop some wood that day. The writer objected that she had a boy coming from the orphanage. Jerry replied that he was the boy. The writer ordered whether it was he and said that he was small. Jerry told that size does not / (did not) matter chopping wood and added that some of the big boys did not chop wood. Jerry further said that he had been chopping wood for a long time.

 

Or, Jerry said that he could chop some wood that day. The writer objected that he had a boy coming from the orphanage. Jerry replied that he was the boy. Being surprised, she asked him whether it was he and said that he was small. Jerry told that size did not matter chopping wood and added that Sam of the big boys did not chop wood. 3. Change the narrative style by using indirect speeches. [Cumilla Board-2023]

"What's a puppet show?" Mita said to her father. Father said. "Let's go inside and you can see yourself." Inside the tent Mita said, "How strange! A doll is dancing and talking." Father said "A man behind the screen is moving the doll. Do you understand who is talking?"

 

Answer: Mita asked her father what a puppet show war. Her father suggested that they could go inside and she could see herself inside the tent. Mita astonished and replied that it was very strange and added that a doll was dancing and talking. Her father replied that a man behind the screen was moving the doll and asked her if she understood who was talking.

 

4. Change the narrative style by using indirect speeches: [Jashore Board-2023]

 "I have won a lottery and got 10 lakh taka," said Samira. Congratulations!" I said. "What do you intend to do with the large amount of money?" "I want to serve my poor village people. So, I have made up my mind to establish a hospital in our rural area," Samira replied. "Thank you." I said. "I shall also help you in this respect."

 

Answer: Samira told me that she had won a lottery and got 10 lakh taka. I congratulated her and asked what she intended to do with the large amount of money. She (S) replied that she wanted to serve her poor village people and so she (S) had made up her (S) mind to establish a hospital in their (S) rural area. I thanked her and added that I would also help her (S) in that respect. 

 

5. Change the form of narrative style by using indirect speeches: [Dinajpur Board -2023]

"Why do you stop me?" asked Rubel. "Have I done any wrong?" "You are driving so fast. It is not the rule," said the traffic sergeant. "Sorry Sir. My mother is in the hospital. So, I am in a hurry," said Rubel. 

 

Answer: Rubel asked the traffic sergeant why he (T) stopped him (R). He also asked whether/if he (R) had done any wrong. The traffic sergeant replied that he (R) was driving so fast and said that it was not the rule. Rubel apologized respectfully and told him (Ts) that his (R) mother was in the hospital. He further said that he was in a hurry for this reason.

 

6. Change the narrative style by using indirect speeches: [Sylhet Board -2023]

Mr. Kalam said to the bank manager, "May I get in, sir?" "Yes, come in," said the bank manager. Mr. Kalam said, I want to open a bank account." The manager said, "What type of account will you open?" I want to open a savings account, "said Mr. Kalam. Please go to the front desk. The officer will help you." “Thank you very much," Mr. Kalam said.

 

Answer: Mr. Kalam respectfully asked the bank manager whether he might/could get in. The bank manager replied affirmatively and told him (K) to come in. Mr. Kalam said that he wanted to open a bank account. The bank manager asked him (K) what type of account he (K) would open. Mr. Kalam replied that he (K) wanted to open a savings account. The bank manager requested him (K) to go to the front desk and added that the officer would help him (K). Mr. Kalam thanked the bank manager very much.

 

7. Change the narrative style of the passage by using indirect speeches: [Barishal Board-2023]

Answer: Fahim asked Habib how was his (H) mother. Habib replied that she was better that day. Fahim asked again whether he (H) had taken her to any doctor. Habib replied affirmatively and told that the doctor had x-rayed her. Fahim suggested Habib to take a good care of her then and to ensure all medications that had been prescribed. Habib assured him and thanked him a lot.

"What's your dream? Do you have any dream?" said Zayed. "Yes, I have a dream. My dream is a full plate of rice." said Robi. "Come with me. I am going to materialize your dream." "How kind you are!" said Robi.

 

Answer: Zayed asked Robi what his (R) dream was. He (Z) again asked him if he (R) had any dream. Robi tenderly replied in the affirmative that he (R) had a dream. He (R) added that his (R) dream was a full plate of rice. Instantly, Zayed told him (R) to go with him (Z). He (Z) added that he (Z) was going to materialize his (R) dream. Robi exclaimed in wonder that he (Z) was very kind.

 

9. Change the narrative style by using Indirect speeches: [Mymensingh Board-2023]

"What kind of stories did Aesop tell?" asked Anwar. “Fables,” replied Mr. Rahman. "Do you know what fables are?" "No," replied Anwar. "Well," continued Mr. Rahman, "Fables are stories with a moral. And Aesop entertained people by telling these stories." 

 

Answer: Anwar asked Mr. Rahman what kind of stories Aesop had told. Mr. Rahman replied that they were Fables and asked if he knew what Fables are. Anwar replied in negative. Mr. Rahman nodded and continued that Fables are stories with a moral and added that Aesop had entertained people by telling those stories.
