খ্রীস্টাব্দ। নাটকের কাহিনীতে
ডেনমার্কের যুবরাজ হ্যামলেট তার পিতার
হত্যার প্রতিশোধ নিতে সচেষ্ট হয়। সে তার
মৃত পিতার আত্মার কাছে জানতে পারে,
তার চাচা ক্লডিয়াসই হত্যাকারী।
ক্লডিয়াস ভাইকে হত্যা করে ডেনমার্কের
সিংহাসনে আরোহণ করে এবং
ভ্রাতাপত্নী (হ্যামলেটের মা) রানি
গারট্রুডকে বিয়ে করে। যুবরাজ হ্যামলেট
খুবই অসন্তুষ্ট হয়, ক্ষুব্ধ হয়; কিন্তু
ক্লডিয়াসের অপরাধ সম্পর্কে নিশ্চিত না
হয়ে তার বিরুদ্ধে কোনো পদক্ষেপ নেবে
না। অবশেষে কৌশলে একটি নাটকের
মঞ্চায়ন করে হ্যামলেট, যাতে দেখানো
হয়-কোনো এক রাজার ভাই রাজাকে হত্যা
করে সিংহাসন দখল করে এবং রানিকে
বিয়ে করে। নাটক দেখে ক্লডিয়াসের মনে
বিরূপ প্রতিক্রিয়া হয়। নাটকে দেখানো
অপরাধ ও কৃতকর্ম একই ধরনের হওয়ায়
রাগান্বিত হয়ে সে নাটকের স্থান ত্যাগ
করে। হ্যামলেট নিশ্চিত হয়, ক্লডিয়াসই
প্রকৃত অপরাধী। আর ক্লডিয়াস হ্যামলেটের
মতিগতি ভালো নয় দেখে তাকে ইংল্যান্ড
পাঠিয়ে দিতে চায়। এভাবেই নাটকের
কাহিনী এগিয়ে যায়। নানা প্রতিকূলতা
সত্ত্বেও হ্যামলেট পিতৃহত্যার প্রতিশোধ
নিতে সমর্থ হয়; কিন্তু নিজেও মৃত্যুমুখে
পতিত হয়।
এই নাটকের বিখ্যাত কিছু উক্তি :-
