Report on the Negative Impact of Dowry System in the Context of Bangladesh
The dowry system is a serious social problem in Bangladesh. It means giving money, property, or expensive gifts by the bride’s family to the groom’s family at the time of marriage. In many parts of Bangladesh, this system has become a common but harmful tradition. Poor parents suffer the most because they have to borrow money or sell their land to pay dowry for their daughters. As a result, many families fall into poverty. Some girls remain unmarried because their parents cannot afford the demanded dowry.
This system also leads to family violence and crimes. Many women are tortured, abused, or even killed by their husbands and in-laws for not bringing enough dowry. It destroys family peace and lowers the dignity of women in society. The dowry system also increases gender inequality and discourages people from valuing girls’ education and abilities.
In Bangladesh, there are laws against dowry, but they are not always followed properly. To stop this evil practice, the government should enforce the law strictly. People should be educated and made aware that marriage is not a business deal. Only through education and moral values can we remove this social curse from Bangladesh.
